How to Add Blog Categories on Shopify | Breakdown & How To

Shopify's blog system has a limitation that catches a lot of store owners off guard: there's no native way to filter across multiple blogs at once. If you're running separate blogs for different topics — say, one for style guides and one for brand stories — visitors can browse each individually, but there's no built-in way to combine and filter them together in one place.

That gap is one of the main reasons Shopify blog pages end up feeling disconnected or amateur, even when the content itself is good. Here's how to fix it.

Why Shopify's Default Blog Page Falls Short

Out of the box, each Shopify blog lives on its own separate page with its own separate URL. There's no built-in filtering system that lets a visitor browse across multiple blogs from one place, and no native way to tag or sort posts by category across blogs. For any store running more than one blog, that means visitors either have to already know which blog to look in, or manually click between them.

A Brand Getting It Right: Afends

Streetwear brand Afends runs their blog as "Behind The Brand" rather than a generic "Blog" — an editorial naming choice that, like MAAP's "Stories," signals intent before a visitor reads a single post. It's a small detail, but it sets a more premium tone than a default label does.

The Fix: Combine Multiple Blogs Into One Filterable Section

The solution isn't to pick one blog over another — it's to pull posts from multiple blogs into a single section and build a filtering system on top of it. That gives visitors one place to browse everything, with the ability to narrow results by category or topic, instead of bouncing between separate blog pages that don't talk to each other.

This kind of section isn't something Shopify includes by default, and building it correctly means it needs to inherit your theme's existing design — matching fonts, spacing, and layout — rather than looking like a bolted-on tool.
