How to Build and Manage Reviews with Shopify Metaobjects
Reviews are one of the most common requests you'll get from clients. Sometimes it's a quote from a happy customer featured on the homepage. Sometimes it's a call-out on the product page. Sometimes it's a full testimonials section. Whatever the layout, clients almost always want the same thing: the ability to hand-pick which reviews show up, rather than relying on auto-generated review widgets.
That's exactly what a reviews section built on Shopify metaobjects gives you. But before we get into the build, let's talk about why metaobjects are the right tool for the job.
The Problem with Typing Reviews by Hand
Say you've got a handful of reviews, and they show up across three sections on the site: a slider, a grid, and a spotlight section. Without a shared source of truth, that's the same quote, name, and rating typed in by hand, over and over, in every section that uses it.
Now imagine the client asks you to swap out a review, or fix a typo in a customer's name. You're not making one change. You're hunting through every section, on every page, finding every place that review shows up, and fixing it manually, one at a time.
It's slow, it's error-prone, and it doesn't scale as the site grows.
The Fix: Metaobjects
Metaobjects solve this by letting you create each review once, as a single entry, with its own quote, name, rating, and any other fields you want to attach to it. Every section that needs to display a review simply references that entry instead of storing its own copy of the data.
The result: when you need to update a review, you update the entry once, and every section using it updates automatically. No more hunting across pages, no more inconsistent copies of the same quote floating around the theme.
What We're Building
In this walkthrough, we'll set up a review metaobject definition, then use it to power multiple sections, a slider, a grid, and a spotlight, all pulling from the same set of hand-picked entries.
