Why These Shopify Brands Use Marquees | Breakdown & How To
Share
A scrolling marquee is one of the simplest ways to add motion to an otherwise static Shopify page — but not all marquees are doing the same job. Some showcase press logos, some carry messaging, and some drive urgency around a sale. Knowing which one you need, and seeing how real brands use each type, makes it much easier to build one that actually works instead of just looking decorative.
Here's a breakdown of three ways brands use marquees well, plus one common mistake worth avoiding.
Logo Marquees as Social Proof
Two brands doing this well are Abstract House and Le Club. Both use scrolling logo marquees to show real press mentions and partnerships without taking up much page space — a useful trade-off on mobile, where space is limited.
A nice detail in both: the marquee pauses on hover, giving visitors a chance to actually read a specific logo instead of waiting for it to scroll past.
The one gap worth avoiding: neither marquee is swipeable. When something scrolls, people instinctively expect to be able to swipe it — without that, anyone who misses a logo has to wait for the full loop to come back around.
Scrolling Text for Messaging
Kirrin Finch and Prose take a different approach, using scrolling text instead of logos. Rather than showcasing brand logos, this version cycles through short messages — product benefits, brand values, shipping info — communicating several points without needing a dedicated section for each one.
Marquees for Urgency
Fly By Jing uses a scrolling marquee to highlight a flash sale. Movement naturally draws the eye, which makes a marquee an effective way to call attention to a time-sensitive promotion, especially against an otherwise static page.
Building a Marquee in Your Own Theme
Each of these approaches — logo marquees, scrolling text, and urgency banners — can be built directly inside a Shopify theme rather than bolted on with a separate app. Building it as a theme section means it inherits your site's existing fonts, colors, and spacing automatically, with no extra app runtime loading on top of your store.
