Part 2: Building a Shopify theme with Horizon
Brandon LandgraffIn Part 2 of the series, we’re diving into the homepage and exploring how Horizon works as a foundation for building out real sections.
This isn’t a polished tutorial — it’s more of a behind-the-scenes look at how I’d approach building with Horizon if I were starting a fresh theme project.
What We Built (and Talked About)
This video is more about experimenting than perfecting. Here’s what we ended up exploring:
Video Hero with Transparent Heading
We started with a video background hero — because why not go big right out of the gate?
I used a file upload for the video and layered a transparent heading over top, just to see how it feels and functions with Horizon.
Product Columns
Next, we added some product columns — nothing fancy yet, but it’s a great way to drop in featured products early on.
This is the kind of thing you’d typically set up with a product list setting, and Horizon makes that kind of setup feel pretty smooth.
Scrolling Hero Text
I played around with scrolling hero text, just to add some motion and energy to the page.
This kind of thing isn’t built into Horizon by default, but it’s easy to wire up if you like adding a touch of movement to your designs.
FAQ Section
To round it out, we threw in a quick FAQ section — super minimal.
Not the most exciting part of the homepage, but super useful and something you almost always need.
Still Early, But It’s Fun
Right now, this series is all about exploring Horizon and figuring things out as we go.
Nothing too buttoned-up — just an honest look at how I think through building a custom Shopify theme from the ground up.
If you’re a dev, freelancer, or just curious about Horizon, hopefully this gives you a better feel for what it’s like to build on top of it.
